Why do shoelaces become stiff?

Stiffness is usually caused by detergent residue, dried sweat, or dirt build-up. A thorough rinse after washing usually fixes it. If laces are very stiff, it may be time to replace them.

Stiff laces are your shoes asking politely for a refresh.
